Dear Parents:

At 6:30 a.m., the Bedford Police Department notified school officials that three white

males had fled the scene of a routine traffic stop on foot from Route 684 near the Fox Lane

Campus. As a precaution, school officials and the police felt extra security measures should be

taken when we opened our schools and throughout the school day. Please be aware that the

police indicated that there was no need for grave concern, no apparent inherent danger, and no

suspicion of weapons involved.

Consequently, throughout the day every school building was checked and put into a lockdown

mode once the students arrived. Bus drivers were notified to be vigilant for any adult

males in the area of bus stops, and extra precautions were taken at each school as students

arrived.

Students participated in normal activities within the confines of our school buildings but

were not allowed outside for physical education or recess. Parents and visitors were screened

carefully before they were allowed to enter the schools. A message was sent via our AlertNow

emergency message system by e-mail and voice-mail to those parents who have provided us

information for this system. Regular dismissal was scheduled with heightened security.

As of this writing the suspects have not yet been apprehended. It is our intention to

continue to hold our Superintendent’s Conference Day and scheduled parent conferences

tomorrow. All our buildings will be checked before they are secured tonight and we will remain

on a heightened alert until further information is received from the police.

Please be assured that the safety and security of your children is always our primary

concern. Stay tuned to News 12 on cable television, the district’s designated radio stations, and

our web site at www.bedford.k12.ny.us for updates on this and other emergency events.

We thank all of you for your full cooperation during these emergency situations.

Sincerely,

Bruce L. Dennis

Superintendent of Schools
