"The salaries of Yonkers' most experienced teachers rose faster than
educators' wages in any other big city in the 1990s, according to figures
from the American Federation of Teachers. "
"Veteran Yonkers teachers' salaries rose 68 percent in 10 years, from
$48,209 in 1990-91 to $81,067, making them the highest paid urban teachers
in the nation, said the union, which released a report last month
analyzing 10 years of salary data of school districts serving cities with
more than 100,000 residents. '
"Salary increases for starting Yonkers teachers also rose 68 percent, from
$23,827 in 1990-91 to $40,068 last year. Next to Fremont, Calif., which
pays its starting teachers $43,884, Yonkers rookies are the highest paid
and made the biggest 10-year gains in the nation."
