Then:

Do you have any plans now that you are retiring?

Well, not really! My wife and I have a house in Cape Cod- I love Cape Cod! I spend a lot of time up there with my family. I’m thinking of maybe doing some volunteer teaching, too. (At $600 a DAY !!!!)

Mr. Lahey Begins Final Year

By NELL MARNER

Mr. Lahey, one of the two assistant principals here at Fox Lane High School, deals with student situations and activities throughout the school year. He organizes student government, student programs and discipline issues. He also helps run the school security system. In a recent interview with Mr. Lahey, Forum learned a lot about what a fun person Mr. Lahey really is.

Forum: How many years have you been at FLHS?

Lahey: I’ve been in the Bedford District for 28 years total. I first started teaching at the middle school but then I came to the high school and I have been here for 23 years.

How many principals have you seen come and go over the years?

Good question! Six principals!

What made you want to come to the high school from the middle school?

Well, I think change is really important. I taught in Croton for a while and then I taught at the middle school for five years as a science teacher. When I moved over to the high school, I first taught earth science. When Mary Lou Meese from the office died, the assistant principal took her place and I took his position twelve years ago. I enjoy this job very much, which is one of the reasons why I stayed here so long. The other reason was because I had three kids who graduated from the high school.

How do you think students have changed over the years?

To tell you the truth, I don’t think there has been a major change in students. However, there certainly has been a lot of parental separation and new television culture going on lately which has changed, but not students. They have always wanted to be successful. In fact, I was looking through some of my old files of kids and comparing them to new ones. Nothing has changed. Kids are still the same as always. The same problems have occurred year after year. But even so, the events of September 11th have changed the views of everyone, not just students.

Why did you choose a career working with students?

I chose a career working with students because I was a graduate at NYU and I was doing biology and chemistry research and at the same time I had a teaching fellowship when I decided that I liked science, but did not want to spend my life in a lab. I wanted to teach and interact with people.

What are your most positive and negative memories at FLHS?

Fox Lane is an outstanding school! Everyone is just so professional! It has been wonderful for me to work in such a diverse environment. It’s a good place to be. I guess a negative thought about the school is that you do run and a lot of the times it is very hard to help them in school.

Do you have any plans now that you are retiring?

Well, not really! My wife and I have a house in Cape Cod- I love Cape Cod! I spend a lot of time up there with my family. I’m thinking of maybe doing some volunteer teaching, too. (At $600 a DAY !!!!)

Do you have any special hobbies?

I play a lot of tennis and I enjoy working out at the health club. I also spend a lot of time remodeling houses and woodworking.

What are you going to miss the most about FLHS?

I am really going to miss all of the interactions with everyone: students, parents, teachers, etc. That’s what has made my life so special! I have hundreds of interactions with people every day. It will be very different without them. I will especially miss the smiles here and all of the students being happy!

Any words of advise for freshmen starting off the year?

Just do what interests you! Do well academically but always do something fun and do it well--whether it’s one or many, many things!
