MEET THE BAUMANN SCHOOL BUS DRIVERS SCHOOLS |
This is a flyer that has been circulated by our opponents that is a complete fabrication. Note right away no mention of the Facilities $91 MILLION proposal or the $70 MILLION BUDGET. One of the Signers is the "B" actress
FRIENDS OF BEDFORD SCHOOLS P.O.Box 418 Bedford, New York 10506 Dear Neighbor, On Tuesday, May 15, Bedford Central School District residents face a critical vote - a vote with far-reaching implications for the well-being of our schools and community. What will we be voting on? the proposed 2001-2002 schools budget, and the election of three members to our 7-member board of education SULLIVAN, SACKS& COMBERIATI FOR SCHOOL BOARD We enthusiastically endorse three candidates for the board of education -incumbents Mel Comberiati and Elin Sullivan, as well as candidate Brad Sacks. Sullivan and Comberiati bring valuable experience to the difficult issues facing our schools today. Both emphasize educational excellence as a guiding principle, while calling for fiscal restraint. Sacks brings to the school board many years of experience as a volunteer within our school district, most recently with the Facilities Advisory Committee. All three candidates are long-time community residents with children in our public schools. Sullivan, Sacks & Comberiati are being challenged by Joe Giardina, Steve Miele and Bonnie Laub. Giardina is an ally of long-time District critic Phil Christe and a supporter of the plaintiffs in the so-called "Satan Suit". Both Giardina and Laub worked strenuously to defeat the District's 1997 bond and have consistently opposed budgets from year to year regardless of their amounts or content. Miele, who has no history of involvement in our schools, sends his children to local private schools and has already come out publicly against the proposed 2001-02 budget, If Sullivan, Sacks & Comberiati are not elected, we believe our community will be faced with a majority on our school board that is hostile to public education and whose main purposes are to defeat any budget, defeat any bond and control the content of our schools' curriculum. For the sake of our children, our schools and our community, we must not allow this to happen and must get out the vote on Tuesday, May 15, for Sullivan, Sacks & Comberiati. "Yes" TO THE BUDGET The Board of Education has adopted a reasonable budget proposal (Proposition 1) for 2001-02, which holds spending increases to a minimum- The proposed budget increase of 6.9% is low in comparison with those of neighboring school districts. All district are struggling with growing enrollments, aging facilities, and rapidly escalating fuel and health benefit costs. What's remarkable is that the proposed Bedford Central budget not only accommodates these pressures but manages to maintain favorable class size while funding expanded programs to help all students meet raised New York State learning standards and graduation requirements. On May 15, the public will vote on a second spending proposition, as well. Proposition 2 reallocates capital funds to address critical building renovation needs. Proposition 2 is fully funded and, if approved, will result in no increase to property taxes. Our community cannot allow the proposed budget to be defeated on May 15, as happened last year. A budget defeat would force the school board to cut spending in ways which could increase class sizes, cut electives, arts and sports programs, eliminate building improvements, lengthen bus rides and leave property values vulnerable. We urge you to vote "YES" on Proposition 1 and "YES" on Proposition 2 on Tuesday, May 15. YOUR HELP IS NEEDED We, the Friends of Bedford Schools - a coalition of parents and community members from Bedford Village, Bedford Hills, Mt. Kisco and Pound Ridge - will be working hard over the coming weeks to get out the vote for the budget and for Sullivan, Sacks & Comberiati. As flyers, mailings and newspaper ads are expensive, we could use your financial support. Donations can be mailed to Friends of Bedford Schools, P.O.Box 418, Bedford, New York 10506.
