MEET THE BAUMANN SCHOOL BUS DRIVERS SCHOOLS |
110599 Annual Hunger Banquet at Fox Lane On Wednesday, Nov. 17, Youth In Action will be holding their annual Hunger Banquet to benefit Oxfam America. The banquet will take place at the Fox Lane High School from 6 to 8 pm. The Hunger Banquet is an effective way to illustrate the unequal distribution of food in the world. It is a proven excellent way to spread awareness about the problems of world hunger and to educate people about them. Attendees are randomly divided and assigned to sat a meal representing the normal dining situation in a first, second, or third world country. First-world countries (USA, England, France, etc.) got a full, three-course meal, while second world members (Egypt, Greece, Bolivia, etc.) only receive a bowl of rice and beans, along with an orange. Third-world participants (Zaire, Ethiopia, Haiti, etc,) get a meager cabbage leaf filled with rice, and instead of silverware, they must grapple with chopsticks. After the meal, people are put into groups to discuss their reactions to the simulation. Oxfam America is a Boston-based organization that works with underprivileged people in poorer countries. It also provides relief and assistance when disasters strike. The Hunger Banquet raises money through donations to help people around the world. Suggested donations are $10, checks to be made payable to Oxfam America. All money goes straight to those who need it most. Call 764-1932 Tor reservations and additional information. |
