MEET THE BAUMANN SCHOOL BUS DRIVERS SCHOOLS |
041103 In praise of those able to confront and handle a very hot potato To the Editor: Often the critic of what I consider its profligate spending and minimal oversight, I now find myself praising our board of trustees, Bedford Central School District. I stand in awe of a new-found vigilance. Why, at just their last meeting, when the agenda called for new business, trustee Mark Slivka gravely presented a most serious item (in fact, it was the only item proffered). Mr. Slivka expressed his great distress that an unidentified someone at the school in which his children eat lunch had removed from the school's menu his own children's favorite food, "French fries." He went on to tell the board, seriously, how much this had upset his children, and the board and attending district administrators were appalled. Who could have done such a thing to our little ones? Why? Without authority? Further discussion, however, revealed that greasy fries are indeed still available to our little darlings, but one must now request "Freedom fries." Thank goodness the board quickly resolved to uncover the perpetrator(s) and to correct the menu. As a district taxpayer, I am indebted to Mr. Slivka and his children, without whose vigilance this jingoistic demonstration might simply have passed unnoticed. Ever the critic, though, 1 must beseech the board to act on those yellow ribbons around town - and isn't there something we can do about all the little American flags? Mon dieu!
